
5 Backyard Baseball Drills for Kids 5–8 (From a Coach Who Runs Them Every Week)
If your kid just started baseball, you've probably seen the look. They come home from practice tired but wired, still wanting to throw, hit, or catch something. They want more reps. The team practice is twice a week. The season is short. And the gap between team practices is exactly where confidence is built.
Good news: backyard practice with kids 5–8 doesn't need a tee, a net, a pitching machine, or any specialized equipment. The drills that actually matter at this age are simple, repeatable, and short. Five to ten minutes each. Here are five we run constantly at Garage Built Baseball, and how to run them at home.

Do two or three of these for 5 minutes each, three times a week. That's it. That's the whole plan.
Why short, simple drills work better than long practices
Here's the thing about kids 5–8: their attention span for baseball is roughly the length of one TV commercial. They will give you their absolute best for about 8 minutes. After that, they're going through the motions, losing focus, and you're building bad habits.
So we stack short drills. 5 minutes of one, 5 minutes of another, 5 minutes of a third. Total practice time: 15 minutes. Total quality reps: way more than a 45-minute "real" practice that loses them at minute 12.
Keep it short. Keep it frequent. Keep it fun. That's the framework.
Drill 1: Wall Catch
What it builds: Hand-eye coordination, glove timing, fielding athletic position
Equipment: Wall, tennis ball, glove
Time: 5 minutes
Find a wall. A garage door, the side of the house, a retaining wall, anything flat. Stand 6 to 10 feet from it. Have your kid throw the tennis ball at the wall and catch the rebound in their glove. That's it.
Start with both hands on the catch. Once they're comfortable, add variations:
- Catch forehand (glove side)
- Catch backhand (across body)
- Short hops (ball bounces on the ground first)
- Quick catches (faster pace)
Coaching cue: "Soft hands. Let the ball come to you. Don't reach."
This is the most fundamental fielding skill in baseball. Most facilities don't drill it enough. Five minutes a day, three times a week, will put your kid ahead of most of their team in fielding by mid-season.
Drill 2: Stance Reaction
What it builds: First-step explosiveness, athletic posture, baseball-specific quickness
Equipment: None (4 cones or markers help)
Time: 5 minutes
Your kid gets in athletic stance: knees bent, feet shoulder-width, weight on the balls of their feet. You stand a few feet in front of them. Call out a direction: "Left!" They take two explosive steps left, then reset back to stance. Then "right!" Then "back!" Then "front!"
Randomize the calls. Don't let them predict.
Coaching cue: "Stay low between calls. First step is the most important step."
At 5–8 years old, this is the highest-leverage drill you can do for general athleticism. It transfers to fielding, baserunning, basketball, soccer, anything that requires reacting to a stimulus. Five minutes feels like nothing. The cumulative effect is huge.
Drill 3: Tee Target
What it builds: Contact quality, swing consistency, target focus
Equipment: Tee, ball, bat. Optional: a target (taped square on a fence, a Solo cup, anything)
Time: 7–8 minutes
Set up the tee at belt level. Place a target 15 to 20 feet away: a Solo cup on the ground, a chalk mark on a fence, a small cone. Your kid takes swings with one job: hit the target.
10 swings into the target, then move the target. 10 more swings. 10 more.
Coaching cue: "Drive through the ball, don't just touch it. Same swing every time."
Most youth hitting drills get this wrong: they emphasize hitting the ball "hard." At 5–8, that produces wild, off-balance swings. The right emphasis is hitting the target, which forces clean contact and balanced mechanics.
If you don't have a tee, use a batting cone or even an upside-down bucket. The tee just needs to hold a ball at belt level.
Drill 4: Shadow Swings
What it builds: Swing repeatability, mechanical consistency, kinesthetic awareness
Equipment: Bat only. A mirror helps.
Time: 5 minutes
No ball. No tee. Your kid takes their stance, swings the bat through the strike zone, holds the finish for 2 seconds, then resets. Repeat 20 times.
Variations:
- 5 slow-motion swings
- 5 normal-speed swings, holding finish
- 5 with eyes closed (feel the rep)
- 5 final swings, full speed, balanced finish
Coaching cue: "Same finish every time. Like you're holding the swing for a photo."
The eyes-closed reps are the secret. They force your kid to feel the swing instead of seeing it. Most hitting coaches don't teach this until kids are 10 to 12. Start it now and you'll see real mechanical improvement by midseason.
Bonus: this is the only drill on this list that needs zero space and zero equipment beyond a bat. Perfect for rainy days, hotel rooms, or in front of the TV.
Drill 5: Beat Your Number
What it builds: Intrinsic motivation, focus, every other skill on this list
Equipment: Whatever the underlying drill requires. Plus a notebook or note in your phone.
Time: 5 minutes
Pick any of the four drills above. Pick one thing to measure: wall catches in a row, target hits in 10 swings, clean reps in stance reaction.
Write down the number after your kid does the drill. Next time, before starting, say: "Last time you got 7. Can you beat 7?"
That's it. That's the whole drill. The number stays in your phone or on a notepad. Every session, your kid tries to beat their own previous best.
The rule: never compare your kid's number to any other kid's. Only ever to their own previous performance.
Why this works: at 5–8, kids are hyperaware of where they stack up against their teammates. That comparison is corrosive. It kills kids who are behind and inflates kids who are ahead. "Beat your number" replaces it with the only comparison that actually drives improvement: yesterday-you vs. today-you.
Kids love this. Parents underestimate how much.
A sample backyard practice week
If this all feels like a lot, here's the simplest possible plan. Three sessions, 15 minutes each.
Monday (15 min)
- Wall Catch (5 min)
- Tee Target (8 min)
- Beat Your Number tracking on either
Wednesday (15 min)
- Stance Reaction (5 min)
- Shadow Swings (5 min)
- Wall Catch (5 min)
Friday or Saturday (15 min)
- Pick the two your kid wanted to do again
- Add Beat Your Number tracking on one
That's it. 45 minutes a week of focused practice. Most kids on most youth baseball teams get less.
The mistakes parents make at this age
A few quick anti-patterns to avoid:
- Don't run a 45-minute practice. They'll check out at minute 12, and you'll be building bad habits for the last 33 minutes.
- Don't compare your kid to teammates. Use Beat Your Number instead.
- Don't emphasize "hit it hard." Emphasize "hit the target." Hard contact comes naturally from clean mechanics.
- Don't skip the warm-up. Even at 5–8, two minutes of movement before hitting prevents injuries and improves focus.
- Don't coach mid-swing. Let them take 5 to 10 reps, then offer one cue. Resetting their swing every rep is overwhelming.
- Don't make every practice about improvement. Sometimes the best practice is just 15 minutes of fun reps. That keeps kids loving baseball, which keeps them practicing, which is the actual goal.
